Casio Men's G9000MS-1CR G-Shock Military Concept Black Digital Watch Review

Casio Men's G9000MS-1CR G-Shock Military Concept Black Digital Watch
Average Reviews:

For start,the design of the watch is great. The visual bulk of the watch disappears as soon as it's on your wrist; it doesn't sit as high on your wrist as some G shocks tend to and the rubber strap is quite comfy. The buttons on the sides of the Mudman are large but a little stiff due to the one piece construction of the buttons and case to greatly reduce mud from entering inside the case. The shortcoming with the G9000MS-1 model specifically however is the display. Forget about trying to read it in low light conditions at all, and even when there is adequate light, you may find yourself tilting it at just the right angle in order to read the digits. The smaller details of the display such as the alarm indicators are all but impossible to read without the backlight. Once the backlight is activeated, the digital display characters go from a dull red to a bright blue, and the white words around the display are lit up in a bright white. Aesthetically, the blacked out face in combination with the black case, band and metal bits make it fit the theme well. The G9000MS-1 is still as practical and durable as any other G Shock, just expect to get more use out of the backlight.

Citizen Men's BM8475-00X Eco-Drive Military Black Plated Steel Canvas Strap Watch Review

Citizen Men's BM8475-00X Eco-Drive Military Black Plated Steel Canvas Strap Watch
Average Reviews:

I considered this purchase from the viewpoint of an already satisfied Eco-Drive owner. My original Citizen features a titanium case and strap and is great for business attire. But I wanted a less formal watch for casual wear. This watch caught my eye, and it was love at first sight. The watch arrived after about five days, as advertised. Upon opening the box, I was taken aback by the size. This is a large-face watch, and I was expecting something about the size of my titanium case. I was considering returning it, then decided to give it a try and sell it on eBay if I didn't like it. As it turns out, I got used to it after a couple of days. The canvas strap became a little more pliable, which helped the watch stay in place better on my wrist, and the discomfort of the band disappeared. Now I can focus on enjoying the big face and oversized luminous digits, which glow extraordinarily bright when exposed to a light source at night. Like my original Eco-Drive, this watch keeps excellent time. So far I have not detected a single second's variance between checks and settings. If you order this watch, keep in mind that the face is larger than most and that you'll have to be patient while the canvas strap gets pliable.

Ideal for everyday wear, the Citizen Men's Eco Drive Strap Watch features a casual, canvas watchband with buckle clasp that's sturdy and durable. The metal grommets on the watchband add a unique touch. The clean, black dial displays large Arabic numeral indexes at three, six, nine, and 12 o'clock along with an analog day and date display. The simple dial is bordered by a black ion-plated stainless steel bezel and case. Powered by Japanese quartz movement and fueled by natural and artificial light, the Citizen Men's Eco Drive Strap Watch is ecologically friendly and functions without a battery. Plus, it's water resistant to 330 feet (100 meters).

Seiko Men's 5 Automatic Watch SNK807K2 Review

Seiko Men's 5 Automatic Watch SNK807K2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am still in the process of reviewing this product. Here's what I have so far:
Xbar107 seconds/week (runs fast) (7 min./month compared to 2-4 sec./month quart watch)
St DEV27 sec.
N =7
95% CI2.447 using Student's t
m+ =136 seconds/week
m- =78 seconds/weekSummary:
Good points:
*Beautiful with dark blue face, white symbols, functional medium blue nylon band;
*Easy to read, even in the dark;
*Easy to use with uncomplicated settings similar to other watches;
*Compact design;
*Measurement consistency is excellent compared to quartz mechanism.
Bad points:
*Difficult to set time (see instruction below);
*Gains 10 seconds a day (consistency); and
* Does not have a manual wind stem.
Discussion
This watch looks great. Unlike other self-winding or kinetic watches, this one is compact. In the best tradition of Japanese product development they thought hard on how this watch should function and say about the wearer. The hands are easy to reading, even for those of use with failing eyesight. The second sweep hand has a read tip allowing easy setting of the time.
Unlike some Japanese product, they provided a short, simple instruction on winding the watch. Here, I am comparing them to Citizen's ecco-drive watch, which I also own. Just gently work your arm back and forth for three minutes and the self-wind watch will charge; or, you could wear it for a day.
Okay, now for the negatives. First, this is not your quartz watch. The original self-winding mechanism was invented, according to Wikipedia, by a Swiss watchmaker in 1770. Since then it has gone through several improvements but is not as accurate as the quartz mechanism popularized starting in the 1970's. Sieko warns that this watch could be off by as much as 10 seconds a day. One days use indicates that my watch runs about 10 seconds fast.
The great watchmaker Harrison, who invented the first chronometer accurate enough to track longitude, said that consistency is more important than accuracy. (A poor copy of one of Harrison's chronometers was carried by Captain Cook on his circumnavigation of the globe. He had nothing but good things to say about it.) I have another self-winding watch, an Armitron, which runs consistently 15 seconds fast on days that I wear it.
From my measurements of quartz watches, their accuracy, while dazzling when compared to old hand-wound watches, are less accurate than my old German pendulum clock. So I am told, the longer the arm, the more stable the swing and the more accurate the timepiece. I compare everything to atomic time. And, because the quartz mechanism is battery-driven, it seems to suffer from inconsistency. I carefully measured my collection of six quartz watches over a 2 year period. While the battery was new, the error was consistent. As the battery burned out, the error became difficult to predict. Sometimes a positive error (adding time) would become a negative error (losing time) as the battery died. This dying period was also hard to predict.
The accuracy of the quartz mechanism is not as good as my pendulum clock. They all lost or gained approximately 2-3 seconds, on average, per month.
Based on a week of measurements with the Armitron, I would say that it is shockingly inaccurate but consistently so. Assuming that the Sieko error continues to be consistently 10 seconds fast this will mean that I will have to reset it every week. This is a small price to pay for an otherwise beautifully crafted and honestly-priced handiwork.
Setting time
The date and day are fairly easy. I suggest turning the watch arms until the click past a day so you won't be twelve hours off.
Setting the time is another matter. What works best is to set the hour and minute hands, then gently hold the second hand. It should pulse a little as it tries to force itself forward. Once the seconds are accurate, release and the second hand should be accurate. It takes a little practice at first and don't set the time until you pump the watch 3 minutes to charge the spring.
Time to unwind
It takes about 39 hours (1 test) to unwind.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thank you.

Citizen Men's AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph Canvas Watch Review

Citizen Men's AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph Canvas Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I upgraded to the eco-drive from a watch that recharged by wrist motion. So far I'm a lot happier with the eco-drive. It holds a charge a lot longer, so it's not a problem to leave it unworn for a day or two. I didn't like the green military style band on this one, but it was easy to swap for a leather 20mm band. The stock band was a tad small for my wrist. I would expect a lot of men would need to swap it. The numbers look big in the picture, and they're big on the watch. I like the big numbers, others might not.
May 2008 Update:
I still like this watch as much as the day it arrived! It works perfectly, never runs out of battery and looks good. For those of you who haven't paid for a decent watch, you might not realize you're missing out on a good quality glass / crystal face. Mine still is scratch free. The watch looks pretty much brand new, even though I wear it every day.

Keep time with military precision while adding a unique edge to your wardrobe with the Citizen Eco-Drive Men's Chronograph Canvas Watch. Featuring the clean look and the rugged dependability of a stainless steel case and bezel, this timepiece relies on the unique Citizen Eco-Drive movement system, so you never need to replace its battery. Eco-Drive is an advanced, technical system that uses a thin solar panel under the dial to convert light energy from any source into electrical energy used to run your watch. Also playing a key role in this unique system is a special energy storage cell that greatly increases the efficiency and dependability of using light as a power source. As an added benefit, Eco-Drive power doesn't utilize the harmful chemicals contained in traditional batteries, so it's an excellent environmental choice as well.
The watch features a black dial with easy-to-read Arabic numerals in white, a convenient date window at four o'clock, a slim second tracker on the outer dial, and three subdials that provide chronograph functionality along with the ability to track hours on a 24-hour scale. The dial is further offset with luminescent minute and hour hands and a sweeping red seconds hand. Even the cool canvas band on this watch offers ultra-detailed construction. In addition to featuring a sturdy buckle clasp that relies on steel-reinforced eyelets, the band is backed with leather, which provides added durability and results in a pleasant feel against your wrist. This versatile men's watch is water resistant to 330 feet.

*Charging information: Functions of this watch may not work correctly if the watch is not charged, or charged properly. Please see the full Technical Information.
To set the time *(refer to full-setting instructions here: Manual ):
Pull the crown out to the time correction position when the second hand has reached the 0 seconds position.
Turn the crown to set the time. The 24-hour hand moves in conjunction with the hour hand. Pay attention to AM and PM when setting the time.
Securely return the crown to the normal position in synchronization with a telephone or other time service.
To set the date:
Pull the crown out to the date correction position.
Turn the crown to the right to set the date. The crown turns freely and the date does not change if the crown is turned to the left.
If the date is set while the time on the watch is between the hours of about 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM, the date may not change on the following day. If this happens, set the date after temporarily moving the hands to a time other than between the above times.

Excellent watch for the money. I bought mine through Amazon about six months ago and am very satisfied by this watch. I think I paid $54 for it then and the shipping was very quick. This is my first automatic and I love the fact that I never have to replace a battery. It has a simple elegance that reminds me of WWII British and American issue watches. It runs a little fast (probable gains a minute a week) but this is not a big issue.

I like the clean, aeronautical "instrument panel" look of Bell & Ross watches but don't like their square cases or price tags. This Citizen has similar kind of styling. It's comfortable to wear, just the right size for me and easy to read. I like the bright blue lume as well. The canvas strap is nice and thick and has backing that appears to be leather. Very happy with this purchase.

This watch appears to be very heavy duty and solid construction. There is no rattle and the edges are nice and clean, good machining. Face is crisp and easy to read. Looks just like the promo pic. It is thick and large to me. Heavy too. But i'm sure i'll get used to it in time. However, it has all the plain features i was looking for, and wanted something a little nicer than the crappy plastic looking military watch. I plan to use this watch full time.

Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 Automatic Black Strap Black Dial Watch Review

Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 Automatic Black Strap Black Dial Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seiko offers two similar versions of a mechanical "military" watch:
The SNK809 (which is black, but there are other colors). This has a 21 jewel movement (generally the 7S26B, but the earlier models have the 7S26). It has a 36mm case (excluding the crown) and18mm wide band.
The other model is the lager SNZG15 (which is black, but there are other colors). This has a 23 jewel movement (generally the 7S36B, but earlier models have the 7S36). It has a 40mm case (excluding crown) and an 22mm band.
Both of these watches are gray market. You won't see them for sale in US stores.
I've owned my SNK809 for several months and love it. Its very accurate for the price. Mine gains about 5 sec/day. You'll have to spend a lot of money to do better than that in the mechanical watch world.
Two of my friends own the SNZG15, and they seem to gain about 10 sec/day. Note: The fact the SNZG15 has 23 jewels doesn't mean its more accurate than a 21 jewel movement. It's larger, pushes more mass (bigger hands), and thus I speculate is inherently less accurate than the smaller SNK809.
I got my SNK809 on eBay for $45 + $25 shipping (2009). However, it was shipped from Hong Kong. It had to clear customs, shipping takes about three weeks, and has more inherent risk. I'd expect to pay more on Amazon if it was shipped from within the US. Similarly, I've seen the SNG15 for as little as $105 with free shipping, shipped from Singapore.
What I did not appreciate at the time I bought my SNK809 is that its water resistant rating is 30 meters (WR30M). 98 ft. That seems sufficient unless you're a serious scuba diver, right?
Wrong.
Look up water resistant ratings for watches on Wikipedia.
30 meters is the static water pressure for the test conducted in the ratings lab. The working/dynamic pressure rating will be much less. You should not even shower wearing a WR30M watch, let alone swim with it. WR30M is considered splash resistant only. I have splashed my watch, it still runs great, but depending upon your lifestyle, this may or may not be an issue.
The bigger SNZG15 is rated at WR100M, which you can swim and skin dive with. The smallest rating you should swim with (but no skin diving) is WR50M.
The other aspect of the SNK809 you should be aware of is that its smaller than most watches are today. In the 1960's an 18mm band was typical. Today its small, aesthetically, particularly for a person with large wrists.
When I first got my SNK809, I was taken aback by how thin the band looked (and I have smaller than average wrists). I have read the market Seiko is targeting with this model is teenagers in Asia. That market base probably has smaller wrists than the average American male.
But after wearing it for awhile, I noticed I wasn't banging it into things like I do with my larger watch. And it fit under my shirt sleeves better.
Its notable that my friends say the 22mm SNZG15 is a bit bigger than they wish it was.
I've concluded I like the 18mm band. I'm an outdoorsman (when I can be), and do wish the SNK809 was at least WR50M. Other reviewers will say they wish it had a hacking mechanism or a sapphire crystal. Those are not issues for me, and for the price, let's get real.
This is a phenomenal mechanical watch for what you'll pay. I wear mine to work every day. I wear it to meetings and snicker to myself as my second hand moves at six clicks per second, while others sitting at the table suffer the one second lurch of the ubiquitous quartz movement. Yes, I'm a watch geek. Just be aware of the smaller width of the band and WR30M rating. If those aren't big issues for you, you can't beat it.

I am a watch collector and had to have one of these at the very reasonable price of US $145. I was tickled pink when it arrived. It is a beautiful watch and keeps amazingly precise time; it has 38 jewels, is automatic but can be wound, and my only complaint does not concern the watch but my eyes, being sixty I find it hard to read the day counter, but the whole face is quite legible, and for this reasonable amount for someone wanting a beautifully finished quality automatic watch I recommend it.

The package came quickly, but I what is the point if it get's quickly with out a non-working battery. I went to Walgreens to get three different batteries and the watch will not turn on. This is a rip-off. I will take it to a watch store, but it would have been great if they sent it with a working battery. I will have to take it to a watch store. Which raises the price. Field Watch, 24 Hour Dial, Green Nylon Strap, Black Face Review

Field Watch, 24 Hour Dial, Green Nylon Strap, Black Face
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money, this watch is worth it. Stainless steel case, mineral glass, nylon strap, quartz movement. Nothing more. The face is easy to read. (no backlight or glow in the dark features.) Below each number is the military equivilant for anyone working on the 24hour clock. No day date features, which are the common points of failure on cheaper watches, just less to go wrong on this model.
I took one star off for the VERY cheap nylon stap. It was uncomfortable, and the notches stop for wrists larger than mine. I replaced them with some old leather Timex straps that literally took 30sec to do.
I selected this watch for something very basic for business travel. My work has me constantly flying from one time zone to the other. I needed something that didn't have a day/date feature to constantly move back and forth while traveling. And I will not have to worry about wear and tear for a 15 dollar watch. I gladly would re-buy this over a Timex if I had to do it all over again.

I bought this for my 8-year old son. It is perfect for his wrist. The dial is bright, numbers are big. Very easy to tell time. Am getting one for myself.

Featuring durable canvas straps and an easy-to-read face, the Timex Midsize Analog Camper Canvas Strap Expedition Watch is designed to be your best friend--at least in the great outdoors. Constructed with a lightweight resin case, the watch includes a stationary resin bezel and a gray canvas wristband secured with an adjustable buckle clasp. A tough acrylic window shields the white dial, which features black Arabic numeral hour markers denoting both the standard time and 24-hour clock cycle. The face also includes slim minute indexes, silver-tone watch hands, an Indiglo night-light feature, and a convenient date calendar at three o'clock. Powered by quartz movement, the watch is water resistant to 330 feet (100 M).
